History

Whispering Gallery is published by the DDRA. However, it is successor to a letterzine named Marzipan and Kisses" founded in the USA in 1984 by Jean Clissold and Karen Brandl.  From issue 34, Dorothy Dunnett arranged for an international variant named Whispering Gallery to be creaed and published by the Dorothy Dunnett Foundation (DDF) for readers outside North America. The DDF was wound up by Dorothy Dunnett in 2001 when she created the Dorothy Dunnett Readers' Association which now publishes the magazine. In 2001, Marzipan and Kisses ceased publication, and Whispering Gallery is now available for readers in North American as well as the rest of the world.

Marzipan and Kisses was typed and photocopied by hand. Whispering Gallery was created originally on a Mac. When Denise Gannon took over, it was produced by Microsoft Publisher software on Windows. Since Sandra Hall took over as editor, a Mac once again is used to produce Whispering Gallery. Any new editor taking over will have the choice of Mac (Adobe inDesign) or PC (MS-Publisher) templates to help create the magazine.

After Val Bierman's time, the editor's role has been undertaken by unpaid volunteers. The Editor assembles Whispering Gallery to the appropriate deadlines, and writes any editorial in conjunction with other Committee members. The Editor co-ordinates proofing. Printing is not expected to be part of the Editor's role after Sandra Hall leaves, although these things tend to be flexible. Distribution is handled by the Membership Administrator with support from others. Whispering Gallery has been put together in a variety of software packages in the past. It helps greatly if the Editor can attend most of the 4 Committee meetings held each year in Edinburgh. If you would like to volunteer to be Editor or assistant editor when Sandra Hal leaves after the 2010 DDRA Weekend, please contact Simon Hedges.
